Background of the study :
Foreign direct investment (FDI) is widely recognized as a catalyst for economic transformation, particularly through its role in facilitating technology transfer. In Ogun State, which has emerged as a hub for industrial and technological activities, FDI has played a crucial role in introducing modern technologies and managerial practices between 2000 and 2020 (Ijeoma, 2023). Technology transfer via FDI not only enhances the productivity and competitiveness of local industries but also contributes to overall economic development by fostering innovation and skills development. While FDI inflows are seen as beneficial, challenges such as limited absorptive capacity, inadequate infrastructure, and regulatory constraints can hinder the effective transfer of technology (Chukwu, 2024). This study examines the extent to which FDI has facilitated technology transfer in Ogun State by analyzing investment patterns, industry performance, and the diffusion of technological innovations. Through both quantitative data analysis and qualitative interviews with industry stakeholders, the research aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the channels through which FDI influences technology transfer and to identify policy measures that can enhance this process (Emeka, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite significant FDI inflows into Ogun State, the expected benefits of technology transfer have not been fully realized. Factors such as limited local capacity, infrastructural bottlenecks, and restrictive regulatory environments have impeded the absorption of advanced technologies by domestic firms. This gap between FDI inflows and effective technology transfer limits the potential for improved productivity and innovation. Consequently, there is a need to critically assess the mechanisms of technology transfer through FDI and to identify the challenges that prevent local industries from leveraging these investments for technological advancement (Ijeoma, 2023).
